Selling your boat privately in the UK

Before you list, get a realistic valuation by comparing similar boats on NetBoats and other UK marketplaces. Price slightly above what you'd accept so you have room to negotiate. Buyers trust detailed, honest listings — mention the engine hours, service history, and any faults up front.

Have your paperwork ready: the Bill of Sale, the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) certificate where applicable, service records and any outstanding finance details. Check whether the boat comes with a mooring or berth and whether that transfers with the sale. When a buyer turns up, arrange any sea trial in calm conditions with someone experienced aboard, and never hand over the boat until payment has cleared in your bank account. When you sell, complete a Bill of Sale, notify the marina or harbour authority, and remove your insurance cover so you're not liable for the boat afterwards.

Quick tips for a smooth sale

  • •Clean the boat inside and out — good photos can double enquiry rates.
  • •Get a recent engine service done before listing; it removes a buyer's biggest objection.
  • •Bring a friend for viewings and accompany buyers on any water trial.
  • •Only accept cleared bank transfer or cash paid into your account — beware overpayment scams.
